Apple announces the Vision Pro

It won’t be available until 2024, but it’s already making waves through the AR/VR industry, from hobbyists to professionals.

As Apple is known to do, they’ve taken a product category with a few existing players, and injected their world-class innovation and design to create something leagues ahead of the competition.

Not only does the device look comfortable and smoothly designed, it has numerous sensors and cameras on it to enable effortless interaction with virtual content. There are cameras pointed down just to register hand movement, for example.

The spatial audio is also a nice touch, with many existing VR headsets relying on simple headphones for audio. Additionally, the 3D rendering of the viewer’s eyes is a trippy addition, simulating what it would look like if the device was semi-transparent.

However, it will all come down to whether there are enough benefits to convince people the hefty price tag of $3499 is worth it. It will likely be adopted in well-funded design circles like automotive, where 3D collaboration is at the forefront of their investments right now. However, other industries might be slow to adopt the product until a lower price model is introduced. And Meta has another year to catch up their hardware to match specs.
